STYC is a volunteer run organization and in order to keep putting on the awesome races, we need more volunteers! In an effort to get more Principle Race Officers (PROs) we are having a training seminar to get more racers involved and educated on how our races run. Not only will this give you the opportunity to learn to be a PRO, you will also learn more about the racing rules of sailing…Which will make you a better sailor!

What does a PRO do? They are the "conductor" of our races. They set the course, run the race, and do the scoring.  In our PRO training you will learn how to do all of this! Sound overwhelming? We promise it's easier than it sounds. On the water you will have race committee volunteers as well as a comprehensive Race Committee Checklist.

In this training you will learn:

  • Starting: How to set a start line and start a race - What is included in the start sequence. (classes, flags, horn..)
  • Course Selection: How to select a course using the STYC course selection sheet/tool.

  • The Racing Rules of Sailing: Generically, as they relate to STYC starts and finishes. (over early, barging, collision with committee boat, general recall, etc)

  • Postponements: How to delay/postpone a race when necessary. (No wind!)

  • Finishing: How to shorten course if necessary, score boats as they come in, including method for multiple boats, and how to publish results.

  • Protests: Learn what is needed for a racer to make successful protest and who to contact in the event of a protest.

  • Radio Etiquette: What to say when, to who, and why on the radio.

  • Coast Guard: How and when to contact the coast guard as part of the normal function of racing

  • Emergency Planning: Reviewing the STYC Emergency Plan, discussing how to manage situations, and what emergency services to contact.

The complete training seminar will include class time and on the water instruction. Time on the water will be on the committee boat during our Ballard Cup I & II Series, typically the week following your classroom session. The classroom portion is roughly 1.5 to 2 hours of instruction. On the water time will be assigned after classroom time.

If this sounds interesting to you....Join us on May 19th at the Ballard VFW

If you're registering and aren't a STYC Member, please consider making a donation when you arrive at the event to offset the costs of snacks, beverages, and training materials.
