Kingston Cruise: THE DATE IS NOW MARCH 31st Reserve your Slip
I have reserved some 30 and 40 foot slips with the marina. Kingston has a policy that your first night's moorage is paid in advance so you will have to call and reserve your slip. If you need something larger they can accommodate. The Olympic Yacht Club will also be there that weekend. We'll start with some socializing at the dock and head up to the pub, and then out for pizza. There is a great beach to walk, lot's of ice cream shops etc to explore. So invite some friends for fun cruise and Snooze over to Kingston. It's better than the Ferry!

Three Bar Fiasco
On January 26th we started the Three Bar Fiasco after the sun set, in light wind with a forecast of increasing swills. All participants crossed the start line at the sloop tavern. There was a festive atmosphere as many had just received awards following the iceberg regatta. Those that started fast into their Sloopers hung back at the start line and others took off but missed the next mark at the Smoke Shop (only two rounded it). One group got confused and headed back to the start line while all remaining participants kept going. Finally most made it to the last mark at the Lock and keel Despite stronger swills and light air. We all piled up around that mark with some having to push off to avoid bumping into each other. Eventually those that had started fast slowed down at the finish line. A very good time that we hope to repeat again next year!
Mission Ridge ski cruise
February 24-26 we joined the SBYC annual ski cruise to Mission Ridge. This was their 14th trip and a first for us. Wed like to welcome our new members from the Cain family and Andy Damis and Kristina Southland who came out on Friday to hit the slopes. While they sped down the hill, the cruise director and Arne arrived on Saturday and headed off uphill on snowshoes into a winter wonderland. Mike Thompson and his wife Bonnie hosted a social including video replay of the runs down the hill. Yes someone had a headcam. Its not just great for capturing race moments! The festivities continued at an excellent Mexican restaurant in Wenatchee and off to bed after an exhilarating and exhausting day! Thanks to all that came out to play in the snow.

Cruising into the New Year we get started with some landlubber Social Events
January 28th 6pm Three Bar Fiasco: Cruise through Three (or more)of Ballard's finest boat themed establishments. Of course we'll start at the Sloop at 6 and then head to The Smoke Shop, and finally the Lock and Keel. If you join in late you'll find us at one of those places along the way..
February 24th. Ski Cruise at Mission Ridge Wenatchee
We will be cruising on slopes with the Shilshole Bay Yacht Club. They've invited us along to their annual event. Anyone that wants to go can get in on the price savings that SBYC will be getting in Wenatchee by contacting the hotel directly (not the 800 reservation number at
(509) 662-1818) and mention that they want the Shilshole Bay Yacht Club rate of $88.00+ tax per night for a king suite which includes a sofa bed, microwave, and refrigator. The address is 195 E Penny Rd Wenatchee, WA 98801
I think this will be a great time for both our clubs. One of their members is organizing a night out on the 24th of Feburary at a local pub in Wenatchee. And there will be a Sat. nite social at hotel with food etc. More details as I get them. You will need to drive up yourself, no transportation arrangements for this trip. Please RSVP to me at fishchick_17@yahoo.com so I know how many to expect.
March 24-25 First Spring Cruise
We get get back on the water for a cruise to Kingston. Pubs, restaurants, facilities and great beach. I will reserve some slips but you will need to call with your reservation.

Neptune's Bash Memorial Weekend Re-cap
A large group of cruisers attended The 2nd Annual Neptune's Memorial Weekend Bash in Bremerton. The fleet consisted of 13 or more STYC and Three Sheets boats (it seemed more just kept showing up throughout the weekend!) creating quite a festive presence on the dock. While some chose to make it on Friday and had wind to sail over, those of us departing Saturday motored. We all met for potluck and plenty of libations on the dock and the party moved around to various boats. It was a great opportunity to meet new cruisers and see visit different types of sailboats. The Harbor Festival was in full swing on promenade along the marina providing live music including a naval band that could seriously ROCK! Sunday many of us took the ferry over to the Pirate Festival in Port Orchard where the salty sailors put on quite a show of swords, cannons, and general pirate debauchery. Many of us left early on Sunday to ride the tide out and were met with great wind for a reach across the sound while others continued the Memorial Day party.

Getting to Bremerton Marina: Mike Beste provided the info below
Based on what I see it looks like getting in there about 9pm on Friday or 10am on Saturday is the way to go unless you can arrive as early as 4pm on Friday afternoon. Careful going in there ya'all....
Current Predictions Bremerton Marina
Note: Currents can be a challenge in Bremerton. The closest current prediction point to the Bremerton Marina is the South Entrance to Port Washington Narrows. The times of slack water at this point will closely approximate the time of slack water at the marina. The strongest currents in the marina always flow from SW to NE on both the flood and ebb. If currents in or near the marina are a concern, try to time your arrival or departure around the times of slack water at the South Entrance to Port Washington Narrows. MEMORIAL WEEKEND CRUISE TO BREMERTON 2ND ANNUAL NEPTUNE'S BASH!
We're looking forward to the second annual STYC and Three Sheets Northwest Neptunes Bash and Rendezvous at the Bremerton Marina over the Memorial Day weekend.
As we did last year, we'll be making an offering to Neptune to ensure a season of fair winds, good sailing - and hopefully, a warm summer! Everyones invited to join in the fun just bring a liquid offering for the big man downstairs.
Were planning to do that around 4:00 on Saturday and then have an appetizer potluck on the dock. Three Sheets and STYC will bring some beer, but feel free to bring along your favorite libations as well. We'll also provide all the plates, cups, cutlery.
There is a regatta too. See below. If you are interested in participating let me know. Maybe we can get a couple of teams Three Sheets vs. STYC!!
We figured wed play the rest of the weekend by ear.
A few ideas for other things to do:
Kitsap Harbor Festival the festival will be held Saturday through Monday on the Bremerton and Port Orchard waterfronts and includes a regatta, a murder mystery weekend and pirate's ball, live music and yes, a beer garden. More info and schedule available at http://www.kitsapharborfestival.com/default.asp?page=hm
Take the foot ferry over to Port Orchard, which has shops, an old movie house and a Saturday farmers market. The ferry is the Carlisle II, a 1917 boat that was part of the Mosquito Fleet of steamships that plied Puget Sound from the 1850s to the 1930s.
Explore Manette this funky east Bremerton neighborhood is about a 20-minute walk (or short dinghy ride) across the Manette Bridge. It has a waterfront restaurant and bar (with dinghy dock), a wine and martini bar, a tavern and an upscale Italian restaurant. Read Three Sheets Northwests feature on Manette here: http://www.threesheetsnorthwest.com/blog/2009/02/manette-bremertons-cool-quirky-side/
If you havent been to the Bremerton marina since its upgrade a few years ago, its a terrific facility with big fairways, good docks and free, hot showers. But be advised that currents through the marina can be very strong and make docking a challenge; it's best to arrive on a slack tide.
If you have any questions, feel free to email Deborah (deborahbach@gmail.com) or Anna (fishchick_17@yahoo.com).

The Poulsbo Cruise was a success with fabulous wind allowing us to sail a reach across the Sound at a pretty good clip. Then took it wing on wing through Agate Pass and finished off sailing all the way to the marina. Selah and Serafina were the early arrivals followed by Platypus. We all met on the dock and Selah graciously hosted us and friends with some cocktails and refreshments while waiting for the last two boats. Cricket and Dacha got a late start but also had so much fun sailing the whole way- it was tough to get them to come in to dinner! Great Mexican food in town at a little place down the alley called Casa de Luna. Highly recommend to other cruisers! Most of us got an early start to beat the gate in the Pass and with yet another day of wind and now sun the sail back to Seattle was finished off seeing the PSSR racers finishing up. For those of you that missed it stay tuned for future cruise plans. Memorial Weekend in Bremerton is coming up next. There is a big group heading over including a bunch of folks from Three Sheets. As part of the weekend celebration, a regatta is happening we've been invited to join in so let me know if you want to participate!
Plans for June?? Thinking North this time.. Stay tuned And we'll head over to Poulsbo again for the 3rd of July fireworks!
********** ********** *********
The cruising club is taking off for Poulsbo Saturday April 16th. There are still slips available if you decide to join us! We are blocked for slips F/52 F/68 (Sea Leah in F/61 and I'm in F60). Contact the port if you have a slip preference or just grab any one of those that is open. We will leave Shilshole at 11 for those that want to cruise over together. Tide is ebbing at 10
The plan is to have a meet and greet with appetizers and refreshments. Plan to bring stuff for a potluck. If the weather cooperates we can BBQ dockside. If not head into town for dinner and the pub!

2nd Annual Neptune's Bash Memorial Weekend Cruise
We are making the 2nd annual Neptune's Bash Cruise to Bremerton Memorial Day Weekend. If you are interested in coming along you will need to call and reserve your spot NOW. Call 360-373-1035 and let them know you are with STYC.
They're holding us 14 40-foot slips. There are also a few bigger slips at the end of that dock - two 60s, a 58 and a 50. So if you have a bigger boat request that early, otherwise we can fit a couple small boats there.
They're holding the slips for Friday, Saturday and Sunday night, and you need to make the reservation by March 25th.
If anyone is planning a boat re-naming ceremony let me know and we'll work that into the festivities but either way we'll continue the tradition to toast to Neptune to kick off the boating season.
Also there's a regatta going on that weekend as part of the harbor festival and they want us to join in. If you are interested in doing the regatta let me know and I'll get things rolling with the organizers.
Please RSVP for the cruise and send any questions or other ideas to fishchick_17@yahoo.com so I can make a contact list for the cruise. Stayed tuned for more details.

APRIL Spring Cruise To Poulsbo
The Sloop Cruising Club will be making a trip to Poulsbo April 16-17. No group reservations were available, (Roche Harbor club is in town too) but there are still plenty of slips available for us to fit. I have the end slip reserved (room for one more) and the surrounding slips are open 60-68 and 61-63. Phone 360-379-3505 or go online. This will be a great opportunity to get together for an impromptu rendezvous with another club and hit town as well as dockside festivities!

Our group of Sloopers had front position on the south side of the fireworks barge thanks to the strategic anchoring of Scott Lankford of Prismatic Thunder. The position was perfect and on the leeward side until the wind changed. But all was fine and I would recommend the spot as a standard for this STYC cruise location. The group started with Prismatic Thunder air horning Blue Lullaby, as we were exploring the bay. Then Bob from Spice and Grant (and kids) from Bobby Foster soon joined us. We were glad we have a cat as we watched the others cast off for Doggy duty ashore. Did you know Grants dog is bigger than his kids lengthwise? There were some interesting hoisting techniques used to get the dog into the boat. We all enjoyed each others company with us making the traditional offering to Grant of something iced and cold. He had to settle for wine out of Blue Lullaby. As Prismatic Thunder cuddled on their bow, the rest of us gathered between Bobby Foster and Spice and ate popcorn while watching the spectacular fireworks in good company.

Poulsbo has scheduled fireworks for July 3 again this year, and a contingent of STYC members plans to join the large gathering of cruisers anchored in Liberty Bay. Be sure to fly your burgee and look for other STYC members if youre heading over to Liberty Bay this weekend! The website's Forum page is also a good way to coordinate with your fellow Sloopers regarding cruising logistics.
Have a Great Independence Day Holiday!

Inaugural Neptunes Bash a soggy good time
By Deborah Bach
Whats a little rain and cold when you have a fun bunch of people, beautiful boats to enjoy and a keg of beer to share?
A dozen hardy skippers and crews braved one of the wettest, chilliest Memorial Days in recent memory and headed over to Bremerton for the first ever Sloop Tavern Yacht Club and Three Sheets Northwest Neptunes Bash and Rendezvous. And I think its safe to say it was a success.
As the co-hosts, Marty and I got to the Port of Bremerton Marina mid-morning on Saturday, hoping we wouldnt be the first to arrive. We neednt have worried the crummy weather didnt inspire anyone else to get an early start. The other boats began arriving to D dock in the afternoon, most of them having challenges landing due to a strong current running through the marina (for future reference, best to avoid arriving at the marina during a flood tide).
Once everyone was settled in, it was time to rechristen our boat and make an offering to Neptune in the hope of ensuring a season of fair winds and good sailing. Previously named Iola Anne, after the former owners mother-in-law, our boat was about to officially take on its new name, Three Sheets. We had the decal put on a day earlier and had covered it up until the big moment.
With the crowd of Sloopers gathered around our stern on the dock, we first made an offering to the sea gods. The following is what we recited (with a large dose of inspiration from John Vigor):
We mariners gather here today to call upon the gods of the sea and wind to bless us and grant us safe passage as we embark upon another year of sailing the magnificent waters of Puget Sound and beyond.
Mighty Neptune, king of the seas and all they contain, and Aeolus, ruler of the winds that blow across all waters, we offer our collective and heartfelt gratitude for delivering our vessels from tempest and torrent, for protecting us from the darkness of these deep, frigid waters, for allowing us to reach safe harbors. We acknowledge that our unscathed passage relies upon your benevolence, and we thank you for the gift of your blessings during our previous journeys.
Today, we have come together to make our humble offering and request that we are once again afforded the same privileges and safety your munificence have allowed us. In return, we pledge to serve as faithful and conscientious stewards of this domain you have allowed us to inhabit.
We authenticate our request with offerings of libations, in recognition of the venerated rituals of the sea.
And with a hearty round of cheers, the group made its offerings, tossing liquid toasts into the water. After that, I read an invocation to Neptune and the wind gods as Marty poured offerings of champagne into the water before unveiling the new name.
Combined with our boat renaming ceremony two days earlier, we managed to go through several bottles of decent champagne. And as much as I hate to see good champagne poured down the drain (or in this case, the ocean), it was a necessary sacrifice. Neptune, Ive heard, doesnt appreciate skinflints.
With the official business done, the festivities got underway. A keg of beer was hefted from our boat onto the dock, and boaters brought out various dishes for an appetizer potluck from shrimp cocktail to bruschetta, veggies and dip to delicious homemade cookies and bars. Happy hour happily morphed into dinner time, and the rest of the evening was spent socializing on the dock and visiting each others boats in a sort of floating progressive cocktail party.
We visited Tim and Cherie Morgenroths gorgeous Baba 40, Airloom, and Jen and David Dynes beautiful Halberg Rassy 35, Sol Lucent, trading stories about our boat histories and sailing plans. I cant say what time everyone turned in (admittedly, its all a bit hazy) but Jenn Braden proudly noted that it was one of the few times she put her husband, Ben, to bed, versus the other way around.
The weather hadnt improved much by Sunday morning, but that didnt stop Tammy Walker, who also helped organize the weekend, Jenn Braden and Lisa Doherty for laying out a tasty breakfast of homemade egg casseroles, bagels, bacon, donuts and pastries. They even went to Starbucks and brought back a container of coffee for the gang (thanks, ladies and STYC!)
The energetic crew of Dacha headed out to compete in a regatta that was part of the second annual Kitsap Harbor Festival, placing third overall. Held in Port Orchard and the Bremerton marina, with a foot ferry taking people between the two sites, the festival included live music, food, a boaters swap meet, a Saturday farmers market and vendors selling everything from jewelry to boating supplies.
In the late afternoon, Sloopers again gathered on the dock for happy hour cocktails and snacks, then walked over the Manette Bridge to have dinner at the Boat Shed, a bar and restaurant (with dinghy dock) on the waterfront. Earlier, wed run across the owners of the Manette Tavern and the Side Bar, an adjoining wine and martini bar. Though they were renovating the tavern, they agreed to open up the wine bar for our group.
After dinner, we headed there for drinks. A few people played pool while the rest of us hung out and chatted. If youve never been to Manette, you might want to check it out next time youre in Bremerton. Its about a 20-minute walk across the bridge (which will soon close while its being rebuilt) or a short dinghy ride. Its a charming community with a handful of restaurants and shops clustered along a small commercial strip.
Afterward, the group headed back to the marina, hopefully not disturbing too many of the good people of Bremerton along the way. It was another late albeit fun night.
Most boats left early the next morning, making their way back to their various homeports. We waited until the deluge of rain subsided, then headed out into Rich Passage. Charcoal clouds hung ominously over the mountains and downtown Seattle was completely socked in.
But as we neared Elliott Bay, the sky cleared and we enjoyed a great sail for the last few miles. By the time we were back in our slip it was sunny and warm, just in time for Martys parents to arrive for a barbecue dinner. Neptune smiling on us? Id like to think so.
Boats that attended the rendezvous included, in no particular order, Bella Star, Dacha, Sol Lucent, Vanadis, Kowloon, Blue Martini, Blue Lullaby, Quixote, Red Knot, Lily Pad, Airloom and Three Sheets.
I think and hope everyone who attended would agree that the weekend was a resounding success. Abysmal weather notwithstanding, Marty and I had a great time. STYC is the only yacht club weve ever joined (who can resist a club with tavern in its name?) and the weekend affirmed what a great group of people belong to it.
It also underscored why we all spend untold amounts of time, money and sweat equity to own these floating money pits known as boats. Because sailing is a transportive experience thats impossible to describe. Because its the best way to travel and beats the pants off camping. And because boaters are some of the coolest people on earth.
Were hoping the inaugural Neptunes Bash turns into an annual event, so watch for notice of it next year and come along!
In the meantime, if youre interested in coordinating a rendezvous for the Third of July celebration on Liberty Bay, please contact Tammy soon at tammy.walker@cunamutual.com or call 206.441.3026
And if youd like to host a rendezvous for the Labor Day weekend or any other weekend, please get in touch with Tammy.

Memorial Day Weekend Cruise
Attention Sloopers join STYC and Three Sheets Northwest for the first-ever Neptunes Bash and Rendezvous on the Memorial Day weekend. In the first of what we hope will be an annual tradition, well gather at the Port of Bremerton Marina for a long weekend of sailing, socializing and partying.
Deborah and Marty will be officially renaming their boat, Three Sheets, and will use that as an opportunity for everyone to re-up their good standing with Neptune, our trident-wielding overload of the deep. Well gather sometime Saturday afternoon or early evening to make our offerings to the big man downstairs. Libations are customary, and were told Neptune doesnt appreciate cheapskates, so make it good!
If youve been losing races or things keep breaking on your boat, you might have inadvertently pissed off Poseidon. This is your chance to make amends and get back in his good graces.
Anyone else who wants to rename their boat is welcome to join the festivities. Well be researching the proper invocations and rituals over the next few weeks to help ensure a season of fair winds and good sailing!
We have 10 slips reserved at the Port of Bremerton Marina for two nights, May 29 and 30 (Saturday and Sunday). If you havent been there since the marina was upgraded, its a fantastic facility (and a great place to party!)
There are several bars and restaurants in the funky east Bremerton neighborhood of Manette, about a 20-minute walk (or short dinghy trip) across the Manette Bridge from the marina.
Were also planning a low-key, happy hour potluck for Saturday. Three Sheets Northwest will bring a keg of beer.
Email Deborah (deborahbach@gmail.com) or Tammy (cmgtammy@yahoo.com) if you plan to join so we can make sure we have enough slips and try to reserve more if need be. Please RSVP as soon as possible.
Hope to see you there!
UPDATE (3/8/2010) STYC Snooze & Cruise Weekend - Port of Poulsbo
As our weekend guests slowly trickled into Shilshole we prepared our new boat Vanadis for our first cruising weekend. 5 people and Macintosh for crew - we set off for Port Madison about 5:30pm on Friday to meet up with the Laurens on Piko and Mikey and Cliff on Bamboo. While on the motor across, (in no breeze which is funny because the forecast had me thinking about reefing) we ran into a small rum front while dodging debris in the water. Not to be held back we motored through the rum front and debris and made our way into Port Madison in the dark and rain to find the other two boats.
Now Bamboo is a 50 boat and easy to see, and hear, while she was motoring around the harbor in the dark looking for us. I hailed Mikey over the water asking if he had seen a Waquiez 35 anchored anywhere in the bay, he responded that no, he hadnt seen any. So off we went in the dark to look for the Laurens on Piko, and wouldnt you know that the next anchored boat we motored by (one that Mikey just motored by) was a Waquiez 35 named Piko. Apparently the Rum Front was a bit stronger when Bamboo came across the sound than when Vanadis motored across! With Pikos anchor already set we both rafted up to her and it was just in the nick of time! Very soon after rafting up a very strong rum front ran through the small anchorage followed by a solid Whiskey and beer front. Fortunately the anchor held the three boats and in the morning we where sitting in exactly the same spot as the night before.
Dawn came with an end to the rain and various fronts and it was a breakfast of French toast, Bacon and Coffee for the crew and then off to the races for the three of us. The three boats had planned to do the PMYC Jim Depue Memorial and then head off to Poulsbo to meet everyone else for beers and dinner. Vanadis needed to drop off their dingy at the parents bouy, so they didnt tow it around the race course, so we set off first from the raft up. Bamboo soon followed after the Laurens assured them they didnt need any help with the anchor as they had a windlass. Unknown to the Laurens was that over the night with the diesel furnace running they had run out of diesel and their motor soon sputtered to a stop. Fortunately for Piko she keeps a one gallon tank of diesel in her belly for just such a situation. With the taste of fuel in her she fired up, lifted the anchor and then sailed out of the harbor. Debating between sailing to Poulsbo through the pass with no diesel (nor wind at the time) and sailing over to Shilshole to fill the tank they chose the later and skipped the race and reached across to Shilshole to fill their tanks and then sailed back to Poulsbo for the party! Great story!
These happenings being unknown to the crews of Vanadis and Bamboo they each set off to the 10am start at Point Monroe. Light airs at the start kept Bamboo from racing as shes a true pirate ship and needs a bit more to get moving that the 3 knots we had, off to Poulsbo they went running into a few strong Beer and Rum fronts before the crew on Vanadis caught up with them later in the day. Barely enough wind to get the slightly lighter Vanadis (14,000lbs) moving we chose to race and ended up grateful for the choice. The wind came up to the 18 knot range and we had a great sail around the sound, seeing 8.5+ knots of boat speed while digging the most amazing hole through the water. If I had had my surf board I would have had a great time on the stern wake following the boat! Finishing mid fleet we had a great day of racing, saw some STYC boats reaching across the sound to Poulsbo and learned a few more things about our new boat!
So 2:30pm and we were off to pick up our dingy from the parents mooring ball and motor over to Poulsbo for the party. Arriving in our assigned and reserved spot (thank you Tammy) about 3:30pm it was apparent that some strong beer and rum fronts had been rolling through the Poulsbo Marina while wed been out sailing. Talk of the 6 Tsunami was rampant around the dock as more and more boats arrived, but we all made it through the wave and started really enjoying all the company. Many of the committed boats showed up but as I walked around the docks looking for Beer fronts and Heaters I noticed a number of surprise visitors which was great to see and truly a happy surprise for everyone (yes even you Tammy:)). To the right of Vanadis where our neighbors from the night before, Piko and then Quixote on Pikos starboard side. Across from us was Illusionist, Frog Prints, Kowloon, Blue Martini, Ishtar, Tsunami, and then coming back down our side of the dock was Dacha, & Lucidity representatives from STYC, PMYC and CYC Seattle, proving once again that STYC welcomes everyone and has a good enough time that people want to come and join the party from each and every club!
And a party it was, dinner was set for 7pm so we had a few hours to roam boats, see people we hadnt seen in months and tour each boat to see who had the best heater running. The storms in the Poulsbo area must have been stronger than we thought because once we made it to dinner we noticed people experiencing severe gravity storms while the beer and rum fronts just kept rolling through the crowd.
Nothing a little pickled herring, bread and dip couldnt keep under control but the fronts kept many of us on our lookout through the night until they finally ran out during the wee hours of the morning, after a very interesting motivational speech I might add.
Up early for most of the boats as the US was playing Canada in our national sport (well it should be) at 12:30. The best plan was to get back before the match, we figured wed get home easier before than after the match as the fronts looked liked they may build again in the early afternoon during the game. Dacha followed us out of the marina and we motored with the tide back through the pass in flat calm weather while our cabin boys (girls in this case) made us smoked salmon scramble, sticky buns and coffee for breakfast. Motoring by Point Monroe the sun was burning through the clouds, making the Olympics and Rainier as beautiful as Ive ever seen them. Behind us Dacha set their sails and killed their motor for the upwind winter sail to Elliot bay. Picture perfect.
An amazing winter Snooze and cruise, anchor and raft up, racing and cruising, friends and family, another perfect weekend sailing in the pacific NW. Thanks to everyone that came out and a big thank you to Tammy for doing all the organizing and stressing so no body else had to! See you on the water soon!

STYC CRUISING FIRST ANNUAL VASHON ISLAND CIRCUMNAVIGATION AND TIDES TAVERN TREK
Saturday 9/26/09 dawned a clear crisp fall day and conditions were promising. The West Point buoy provided a convienent rendezvous and starting area. The hope being that a fabulous northerly would join the flood tide and whisk the fleet past 3-Tree Point, Pt. Robinson and deposit us at the Gig Harbor entrance.
Salient and Dacha were joined by Blue Lullaby and things got underway. A very subtle northerly was barely enough to push the sailing fleet out of the fishing fleet but conditions were looking promising enough that Salient broke out the secret weapon: a Code 0. Dacha was forced to follow suit with the trusty oz symmetrical while Blue Lullaby sensibly ignored the nonsense and motor-sailed ahead to anchor up south of Pt. Robinson and wait for better wind conditions. The wind Dept. gave up the tease and engine penalties were accrued until off Commencement Bay a brief but spirited reach ensued on the anticipated northerly tardily filling down the sound and lifting an anchored Blue Lullaby off to Gig Harbor. Upon entering the Harbor the STYC fleet discovered Quixote already anchored off the Tides Tavern dock having come down Colvos Passage and wondering where the rest of the Sloopers might be. Things were quickly sorted out in the Tides and the ensuing Awards/ Happy Hour. The scoring was highly scientific and took into account several factors including Race Committee refreshments but sadly no salmon credits! John and Barbara aboard Blue Lullaby took top honors primarily due to their nifty sailing off the hook and reach into Gig Harbor. Phil and Susan aboard Quixote were second with the lowest engine penalty of the day and an apparently great sail down Colvos. Salient and Dacha initially shared last place until Jay and Catherine bought off the RC with a pitcher getting Salient sole third place rights. The awards continued with the UW and WSU football teams providing the losing entertainment. Michelle and Antonio took the rally award with a 1600, Elliott Bay Marina departure and subsequent arrival in Gig Harbor to join the fun. Overall a great day and worthy destination.
Sunday, broke to yet more sunshine and the kingfishers rattling about. The fleet rallied for the 0930 start. A light breeze in the cozily protected Gig Harbor concealing a refreshing 20 knot northerly pumping down Colvos passage. Crews sprung into action to get things stowed and ready for battle while remembering strangely rusty reefing and headsail change procedures.
Quixote seemed the best prepared and charged up Colvos Passage sailing with a reefed main and fractional hoist blade headsail making impressive speed. Antonio helmed Tsunami while Michelle wrestled with a headsail change and foredeck issues eventually getting squared away to the frisky breeze. Blue Lullaby had left the harbor earlier and was busy trying to get that elusive salmon credit again to no avail and now was chasing after the fleet duking it out on a fabulous, cobweb clearing beat. The wind held steady for the rest of day perhaps diminishing somewhat. Salient engined past needing to get back for the overland trip to Corvalis. Tsunami also had schedule issues and had to retire. This left Dacha and Quixote trading tacks and leading the way back to West Pt. Going to the west of Blake Island payed dividends for Dacha and she took line honors but by a remarkably close 2 minutes after 5 hours of sailing. Blue Lullaby finished a half hour later with a 4 hour engine penalty, no salmon credits to show for it but big smiles anyway.
Perhaps this can become an annual event that can only be more fun with more participants! Afterall, Seattle Yacht Club was out there on the exact same course providing some worthy combatants er comrades! Anyway thanks to all who came out and we look forward to doing this trip again if not next year then sooner!

Title: Sloop Tavern in is the 2009 line in Poulsbo
STYC colors were flying the line at Poulsbo this year on one of the largest rafts with s/v Bamboo in the middle supporting the burgee. Special thanks to the Poulsbo Police for letting us maintain the fireworks line and allowing us to stay put. They shot a lot of readings and determined we were 1003 feet from the barge. Never guess what the minimum distance was? The weather was warm and the people were awesome. This one goes down for all interviewed as the best raft they have ever been a part of. Eighteen strong for the fireworks all said and done, however she held onto eight of us right through Sunday afternoon. Good times.

FIRE WORKS ARE ON! It has been confirmed (6/5/09) that there will be fireworks at Poulsbo this year. Use the website's Forum page to coordinate logistics - or just show up in Liberty Bay proudly flying your STYC burgee and look for other Sloopers there. Mike Beste's Skookum 47 'Bamboo' will be moored in a star raft through Sunday afternoon, and Mike has also offered to serve as STYC's point of contact in Liberty Bay. Contact Mike (206-714-6041 cell, mbeste@fulcrum.net) for help locating other Sloopers. Have a safe and sane 4th!

GOTBOATi 2009
Get Out The Boat Once Around The island
Our Memorial Day Weekend sail was the Traditional Snooze and Cruise/Race, STYC Style organized by GOTB founders Ben and Jennifer Braden.
The tone for the event was set with most of the cruisers meeting at the Sloop on Friday night for a round or two, and to pick-up their first two cards for the poker run. The cruising officially started Saturday with Dacha, Whiskey Run, Mitchs 210, Kowloon, Blue Lullaby, Tip-N-Ale, More Uff Da and Bamboo departing between the Hamburger buoy and the fishing pier at the north end of Shilshole. Participants were allowed to go either direction through the line and at any time they would like to start headed for Port Orchard Marina. Most of the boats left between 8am and 10:30am and had a great sail across the sound and through Agate pass to Battle point before the wind crapped out. Bamboo, Tip n Ale and Dacha anchored to fish at Battle point for their 3 second per mile addition. Unfortunately no one caught anything and after half an hour the wind came back up and it was off to Port Orchard for the evening festivities. Joining in on the Saturday night stay in the crowded Port Orchard Marina were Kelly on Blues Power, the classic Epic, Bob and Diane on their Jollygood out of Olympia and Laney, Mark and Cujo aka Curry on Steele Breeze from Hood River, OR. 12 boats tied up in 10 slips, and the best was the 48 Bamboo fitting into the 40 slip, you can see the video at You Tube (www.youtube.com), just do a search for GOTBOATi
Day 1 Class 1
1st Place was awarded to Kowloon. Ken worked hard for this since it was Tammys first time with the Asymmetric. Really, its more like the Tammy worked hard to overcome a couple of challenges for this.
2nd Place went to More Uff Da who sailed the entire way by Mel and Joe without using their motor and they still like each other!
3rd Place was Mitchs 210.
4th Place was John and Lisa on Dacha.
Day 1 Class 2 (yes, there were two classes)
1st Place was John and Barbara on Blue Lullaby. They waited to leave Shilshole until the wind came up and they could hit the max flood at Agate pass
2nd Place went to Whiskey Run, who left earlier but spent more time on the water!
3rd Place was Bamboo. Now, thats a big boat!
4th Place was Tip n Ale, brought the whole family along!
A blast was had by all! The planned pot luck was by far the most FANTASTIC part of the day. Great appetizers, American Burgers, Mexican Enchiladas, Spanish rice and an assortment of fruits and salads Oh my! Even the Harbor Master was impressed, moocher...
Dinner ended with some great desserts: One particular hit was the Corn Flake/BACON cookies. Yes, bacon! The evening went on into the night at a local watering hole featuring Loose Gravel and the Quarry, a great local bar band. Bob was kind enough to purchase the groups CD titled Around the Sound as a memento of the night. Thanks Bob!
Day 2 Class 1
1st Place Kowloon with 10 minutes left on the allowable motoring part
2nd Place More Uff Da and well deserved since they did pick up the nastiest piece of Flotsam
3rd Place Dacha. Good thing they called their time in, even though it was after the awards at the Sloop.
4th Place Mitchs 210
Day 2 Class 2
1st Place Blue Lullaby
2nd Place Whiskey Run
Bamboo and Tip n Ale scored DNS as they went off cruising for another day.
Day 2 was light and the tide was changing at 11:20 to a flood so we had to get through Rich passage before the current said otherwise. Boats started to leave about 10:00am (except Blue Lullaby) trying to motor through Rich Passage before the change. On Kowloon, the wind came up around the fish pens and a great sail was has on a southerly around Bainbridge and all the way into Elliot bay when the Southerly Crapped out and it was time to motor through the finish. It was a hot sunny day without the best winds but what really matters is the overall great time and spirit everyone had that partook on this event. Blue Lullaby dominated the weekend with their strategic departure on Saturday as well as their timely departure Sunday morning to get through Rich Passage at Max ebb (John reported they hit 11.5 knots over the bottom, wow) before the rest of us had even left the dock (really before the rest of us got out of bed, which may explain all the tequila John kept buying at the bar on Saturday night). . . then they had the nerve to get the luck of the draw in the Poker Rally and went home with the bottle of Yum, a clean Sweep for John and Barbara!
Next year no one leaves without partaking in the group breakfast, which entailed egg/ham/salsa breakfast burritos and about 3 lbs of bacon with some sausage thrown in!
Special thanks to GOTB and STYC for providing fabulous prizes.
Thanks again to all for making it a great event and we'll see you on the water again soon!

Tired of doing Swiftsure, been there, done that. Want to take that boat of yours somewhere besides a nice quiet anchorage? Need to get that boat off the dock but hate just motoring somewhere. Then GOTBOATi is for you!
GOTBOATi, Get Out the Boat Once Around The Island is a Traditional Sloop Tavern Yacht Club & GOTB Snooze and Cruise with a few new twists to keep it interesting. This isn't a race, but who doesn't compete if there is another boat out sailing, Huh?
Pick your way around the island, motoring is encouraged. A scavenger hunt and fishing derby are included to keep the kids (and Nate) engaged while out on the boat, (what we are calling "exceptions"). Everyone will be getting together at the Port Orchard Marina with its farmer's market, shopping and maritime festival. You get to enjoy sailing with other sailors on a lazy Memorial Day weekend (Saturday & Sunday May 23rd & 24th 2009) and hang out in the bars in Port Orchard! Win, win for everyone. We're back in Seattle on Sunday night for prizes at the Sloop so you have Monday to cruise some more or head home and work on that honey do list...odds are you'll have had so much fun out sailing you'll at least spend the night at the dock and sail a bit the next day.
We have 10 slips reserved for that Saturday night and there is usually a bunch of side tie with rafting available as well. Hope to see you out sailing and please contact the Sloop Cruise chair, Tammy Walker @ tammy.walker@cunamutual.com to RSVP and get a copy of the Scavenger hunt items and cruise itinerary.

How was the GOTB February 2009??? Read for yourself...
The snow had melted off the boats from Thursday mornings flurries and we headed off to raft up in Port Madison for the night. Jennifer, Mitch, Ryan, Ellen, Julia, Roxy & Macintosh on Whiskey Run joined up with Mike and Cliff on Bamboo just as they where dropping anchor in the silent glassy bay while darkness was setting in. But no worries, we fired up the diesel heat ate some incredible Corned beef, Cabbage and carrots out of the oven, opened one of the bottles of rum and started enjoying the company in now warm cabin. Then for desert Mike fired up his BBQ and set to cooking some awesome steaks, great flavor Mike!
Saturday dawned with a nice northerly blowing and we sailed from the anchorage out around the North end of Bainbridge and down the sound. Whiskey Run showed an advantage at first over the heavier Bamboo, but as the wind built into the 15 knot range Bamboo got its waterline working and lead us around the south end of Bainbridge into some solid calms that eventually made us give up on the sailing and fire up the diesels for a motor through Rich Passage and on to Port Orchard.
Soon after paying our moorage in the great marina at Port Orchard the girls headed off to town for some window shopping while the guys did some good bullshitting on the dock. Once that wore out we met up with the girls and headed to the bar and got to enjoy some great BlueGrass music and other old school bands while watching WSU win another great basketball game.
Back to the boats to get ready for dinner and in sails Dacha with John and Lisa aboard. Up to 9 people now and we headed below in Whiskey Run for some more revelry and to find out who wins the bottle of rum from the poker rally. Now since we had been having so much fun on Friday night we forgot to give out the first 2 cards to everyone, and good thing for John and Lisa because now they got to join in on a chance to win a bottle of Black Seal Rum! And wouldnt you know it John ends up wining the bottle with 3 of a kind Fortunately he decided to share the bottle with everyone and it roamed around the crowd until it was empty. Unfortunately for Lisa she was sitting in the middle and ended up with a bit more rum down her gullet than the rest of us.
Then it was off to Dinner of Pizza and Beer at the local brew pub, highly recommend their pizza, great stuff. I dont remember much of the appetizers, I think the rum had soaked in a bit before the food, but my memory of the pizza really stands out. Tough day of Sloop Tavern style cruising had us all in bed before midnight sawing logs and chugging water.
Dawn broke with rain pounding the deck but by the time we got our selves off the dock the sun was out again. The forecast 15 to 25 knots out of the south decided to take a day off and we started the diesel and motored the rest of the way around the inside of the island back to Shilshole on some still glassy water. Great weekend for the end of February, thanks to Bamboo, Dacha and those that joined me on Whiskey Run (even though their boats had decided not to come out). Hopefully well see more of you out for the GOTBOATi cruise on Saturday and Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. This will prove to be an exciting event with prizes and low key racing along with a scavenger hunt and the Port of Bremertons maritime festival. Stay tuned for more details.

Hey all -
I know some of you hear about Ben Braden's event planning via SA and other media . . . but I wanted to make sure that those of you who aren't regular voyeurs on Facebook, SA, STYC Forum, etc. are in the know!
We will be heading out for a cruising weekend on Friday night, Feb. 27th . . . probably leave Shilshole about 5PM for a leisurely evening sail to Port Madison. Drop anchor and raft-up with any/all of you for the night! We're bringing the Whiskey Run (34' cruiser with a furnace and full galley) - so those of you with race boat accomodations, don't use that as an excuse 'cause there's plenty of room to hang out on the Whiskey Run!
Then on Saturday we'll set sail and race/cruise to Port Orchard for a night at the dock, allowing for socializing on the boats as well as in the bars on Main Street.
Head home and back to reality on Sunday, March 1st!
Be great to hear back from you and find out if we should be looking for you on this adventure!
Smiles,
-Jennifer Braden

Subject: greetings from "down under"
I have just read your latest newsletter on your website. Let me introduce the Kiwis from Down Under - We are a couple of "kiwis" from the Bluff Yacht Club - the most southerly club in New Zealand and we live in Invercargill, the most southerly city in New Zealand. We are a small club of around 140 members. We own and sail a Noelex 25 trailer yacht and spend most of our on the water time sailing in our beautiful southern lakes in the Fiordland National park.
We retired at the end of 2004 and in late April this year we are about to fulfil a dream and travel to your part of the world with a view to travelling the "inside passage". We plan to spend nine days in and around Seattle arriving on 1 May before heading for Ketchican on 10 May. We are hoping to meet members of a local yacht club during our visit and wondered if we can visit your club when we are in Seattle.
kind regards
Ross & Stephanie Forrester
STYC Inaugural Poker Rum
What a blast! We only had 10 entrants this year, but with the Duck Dodgers I lost count at 50 boats on the raft (2 rafts actually, we broke a bow line on one of the boats and the full raft came apart). Kelly and I had a great time hosting the Poker Rum players, glad of the good ground tackle we had out!
The game ended up being 5 card stud. Gamblin' Dan Randolph of Runner walked away with first place with an 8 high straight (well, his crew anticipated this and tried to abscond with the rum prior to the hands being opened, but that's another story), Quiet John Endreson of Blue Lullaby came in second with 2 pair- 10's and 3's and Krazy Bob Leighton of Spice squeaked into third with a pair of Queens, Ace high.
I hope that everyone enjoyed this event, I know I sure did. I've been thinking about a holiday cruise- anyone up for it? We can have some more great cruises, but I sure would like to have some input into what you want to do. I'm always game for an excuse to sail somewhere and hang out!
